Trying to bring out the the full potential of your people? Could you use some good advice and best practices that actually work?
“Make greatness attainable by all” John Wooden (famous UCLA head coach) considered his calling. He knew every member of his team had a potential for personal greatness and it was his job to help them achieve it.
Coach Wooden understood that tapping into a person’s greatness was achieved by creating an environment and attitude that brought out the very best in each person. Everyone had to seek and achieve his own personal best for the team to be as good as it could be.
Each person in the organization is in a position of influence. Everyone is part of the starting lineup. Yes, some people perform their job better than others. But does that make them greater than the rest of the team? No. Wooden made it his first goal to do everything possible to ensure each member of the team was committed to doing their job to the best of their ability – attaining their personal greatness. When everyone was performing at his personal best, the team was the best it could be.
Never underestimate your ability to influence others. How can you help cultivate a person’s greatness?
Here is how Coach Wooden went about doing it:
Each Job Counts. All roles on the team offer the opportunity for personal greatness. Everyone must feel that his or her contributions count and affect the success of the team. Ask for ideas, listen to suggestions, and act on concerns.
Encourage. Understand greatness is attainable by all. When you unleash the desire in those around you to do their best day after day, month after month, year after year, you’ll find talent springing up everywhere. Never criticize, offer a suggestion for another way. Look for opportunities to recognize others who are doing things right.
Expect Unexpected Opportunities. Unforeseen opportunities to go above and beyond may arise for many reasons. It could be when the company hires a new person, wins a new account, loses an old account, acquires a competitor or because someone leaves. Be ready to take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself to be your best and help those around you to do the same.
Believe in the Hidden Potential of All. Some people may not even be aware of what their greatest ability is. Reward and recognize hard work and improvement. Offer words of encouragement when someone has made a mistake, missed a goal, received poor feedback. Share best practices. Tell stories. Be willing to listen. Ask yourself, “What can I do to help [person]?
When you are able to instill the genuine belief that the opportunity for making great things happen is possible in every job, you have achieved something extraordinary. You are creating an organization that fosters and breeds achievers, a superior team filled with people striving to reach 100% of their potential.
Who is the greatest is always the wrong question to ask. How can I help others achieve their personal greatness is always the right one.
