My cab driver last night had great news: There are jobs out there if you want to work!
He was from Ethiopia and seemed willing to talk so I started asking him about himself. He told me about his family back home and how is father and grandfather had instilled in him a strong work ethic that was serving him well in his new home country. I learned that he had had a better job last year, but lost it when the company closed. The cab job is his backup job because he knows he can get work anytime he needs it. He said his boss loves him because he never complains like the other drivers. He said, “What is there to complain about? Just drive around and talk with nice people all day. It’s not great money but it pays the bills.”
He said, “Last week I was parked by a job agency waiting for a fare, so I went inside and asked them what they had available. They had something that was perfect and I start Monday! I wish I could get my friends to understand that there are opportunities out there if you just look hard enough.”
Nice to hear some positive words this holiday season.
BTW: I gave him a good tip! He earned it.
