The flaws and problems with executives are not about their skills, or intelligence or personality.
The problems are interpersonal behaviors, often leadership behaviors. They are every day annoyances that make a workplace more noxious than it needs to be. They are behaviors that are performed by one person against other, such as interrupting or always having to be right.
And the higher you go, the more your problems are behavioral. People aren’t simply successful because they are smart. They are smart and something else. That something else is your people skills.
Would you rather hire a whip smart accountant who alienates all the people around him or a good accountant who is great with people in and outside the firm? No brainer, you go with the one who plays well with others.
One of the best books ever written for high achievers who want to be even more effective is What Got You Here Won’t Get You There by executive coach Marshall Goldsmith.
The Harvard Business Review asked Marshall, “what is the most common problem faced by executives that you coach?” His book discusses the most common and troublesome behaviors executives engage in and what to do about it. (That’s part of the beautify of his advice: you don’t need to do anything different, you just need to stop doing certain annoying things.)
During this series we are going to take a look at his list of 20 Habits and what you can do about them.
What about you? What bad habits do you regularly engage in that creates problems for you and those you work with?
Do you even know what habits you have that are driving everyone around you crazy??
Understanding yourself is the first step to applying these insights. If you don’t know what your blind spots are how can you fix them?
A good behavior assessment can help and so can a 360 Evaluation. If you don’t have one or the other I can help recommend some. Please contact me.
