In their article Tips for hiring millennials, CNBC makes one very important statement: that they’re not all the same! Our clients ask us if they should look at millennials differently when applying behavioral assessments. The answer is yes….and no. No because, just like any group of people, millennials have predictable behavioral patterns that can be measured and used to show who will fit a specific job. Assessments like the Predictive Index work just as well on these people as they did on boomers.
Yes, because these people have a new set of rules. When you see a “rule follower” boomer, you can assume they will work long hours for deferred gratification. When you see a “rule follower” millennial, you can assume they will give you 110% effort for every task they do, but are less likely to work 20 hard years to make partner in your law firm.
How do you know what the new rules are? Ask them! Millennials are very willing to have a discussion of work rules, pay, commitment and promotions. As a mater of fact, they are likely to bring it up in the interview. Use a behavioral assessment to understand them and then ask questions to get to know their personal preferences. You may be pleasantly surprised by the quality and candor of their responses.
