Do you give people the opportunity to wear multiple hats or are they pigeon holed into one job? One thing we know from our studies of employees is that they often have skills and abilities that we never see. The bad news is that employees often assume that we know they can do more but that we are just to stupid to take advantage of their talents. The great news is that they will be happier when we give them the opportunity to do more. Seems odd that people are happier with more to do, but when those things are more fulfilling for them their attitude improves.
Here is an exercise for you. Send out a survey to your people and ask them what additional talents or skills they have that they would like to use. You’ll be amazed at the results.
