Lie number one is “All managers are leaders” according to Mark Sanborn in Inc. Magazine. I could not agree more. There is a very large difference between helping people do what they do on a daily basis and setting the agenda for their future. Managers do the former and, in doing so, provide the backbone of our business. We would fail to execute on the commitments we make if not for effective managers. But leaders serve a different role. They help us set the agenda for the work we will do tomorrow. They also help us move people from the mindset they are in today to the mindset that we need them to have tomorrow.
The skills and motivations of leaders differ from those of managers. We often tell our customers that if you hire perfectly you can promote no one. That means that you need to seed your manager ranks with some who look more like leaders. The leaders you need tomorrow are entering your manger ranks today. Do you know who they are?
