Years ago I attended a program on ‘how to make your workday happier’. It talked about attitude and communications but the focus was on the individual taking responsibility for making it better. Fast forward to today and we now know another solution: hire people who will naturally like the job! While the Inc. Magazine article talks about many wonderful things you can do, the happiest people are those who are doing work that fits them.
We now know from our studies of behavior that each of us is naturally suited for certain types of work. Some of us like relating to people and some of us like to work by ourselves (that would be torture for me). Some of us focus on details and some of us like the big picture. When people are doing tasks that fit their natural style, they are happier and more productive. This has bottom line results, too. Turnover drops, accidents are reduced, sales go up and customer retention improves. All this because the employer took the effort to understand the need of the job and match people to it.
Behavioral assessments can give you the insight to understand both the job and the employee. It is a fascinating science that has enormous business benefits.
