#2: Start with Business Goals, Then Build the People Strategy! One of the great thrills we have in working with our clients is watching HR professionals and managers learn how to build their companies by staffing for the future. While the SHRM article put this as #2, I’d make it #1. The company you are today is the result of the hiring decisions you made 2 to 5 years ago. That means that you need to be hiring today for the company you want to be tomorrow. Too many companies suddenly decide that they need to make strategic changes and discover that the team they have is not ideally suited for the new direction. So here is your homework.
1. Look at our goals for 2-5 years from now and clearly define they type of people that will be needed to excel in that environment.
2. Make sure your HR professionals and managers understand who they should be hiring to fill this future need and are actively recruiting and hiring them.
3. Manage in such a way as to retain this new crop of employees so they stay long enough to help your company become the tomorrow you had envisioned.
